Sandler, Travis & Rosenberg, P.A. (ST&R) reports that the President has amended the IEEPA tariffs on Mexico and Canada. Key points are:
For Mexico and Canada:
- The new tariffs are effective from 12:01 a.m. ET, March 7.
- Goods from Mexico or Canada qualifying for free entry under the USMCA are exempt from the 25% duties.
- Potash that doesn’t qualify for USMCA duty-free treatment will be subject to a 10% duty instead of the 25%.
- There is no end date for the exemption on USMCA-qualified goods.
Additional Notes:
- The tariffs were in effect for three days on all Mexican and Canadian goods, but the exemption is not retroactive, so goods imported during that period are still subject to tariffs.
- While reports suggested exemptions might end on April 2, there’s currently no official end date.
- The Federal Register notice with further details has not yet been released.
